Achieva Credit Union Announces Hugh “Max” Kriever Scholarship

3/13/2013 3:23:29 PM

2 New Memorial Scholarships for Student-Athletes Offered Alongside 10 Annual Scholarships

MARCH 11, 2013 (CLEARWATER) – Achieva Credit Union will award two new scholarships this year in memory of the former Chairman of the Board, Hugh “Max” Kriever.  In addition to Achieva’s annual program of ten $1,000 scholarships, the Hugh “Max” Kriever Memorial Scholarship will award two $2,500 scholarships to one male and one female student-athlete committed to majoring in education.

“Mr. Kriever was a remarkable athlete, educator, coach, mentor and man,” said Gary Regoli, CEO of Achieva Credit Union.  “These two scholarships were created to honor his legacy and empower student-athletes to follow in his footsteps.”

Hugh “Max” Kriever was a United States Marine and played on the Parris Island and Quantico football teams. After his tour of duty, he accepted a full scholarship to play football at the University of Louisville. After college, he went on to accept various teaching and coaching positions and later became the Assistant Principal at Northeast High School, the Principal at Azalea Middle School and the Principal at Boca Ciega High School.  In 1976, he opened the new Pinellas Park High School as the Principal, a position he held for five years.  He later became the Director of County-Wide School Discipline and in 1985, he accepted the position of Area 1 Superintendent for the North Pinellas County schools. After thirty-one years with the Pinellas County School System, Kriever retired in 1991.  He spent much of his time assisting the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and was the Supervisor of Student Interns at the University of South Florida for three years.  Kriever was appointed to the Achieva Credit Union Board of Directors in 1988. He touched hundreds of lives through teaching, coaching, mentoring, advising and challenging. Kriever instilled the concepts of having pride, giving a 110% effort and paying the price in any endeavor undertaken.

Applicants for the Hugh “Max” Kriever Memorial Scholarships must be graduating high school senior student-athletes committed to majoring in education and active members of Achieva Credit Union, with accounts in good standing. Applicants for the Achieva Credit Union scholarships must be graduating high school seniors; or currently enrolled in a college or trade school and active members of Achieva Credit Union, with accounts in good standing.  The application deadline for both types of scholarships is April 5, 2013.
